CDW Government (CDW-G) published its 2008 School Safety Index Self-Assessment Tool earlier this week, which enables school leaders to take a school safety survey and receive an instant score showing how their school compares to the national average (Source: Business Wire, 6/30/2008, CDW-G School Safety Self-Assessment Tool Helps Educational Leaders Identify Security Strengths and Improve Weaknesses). The self-assessment results are meant to spark discussion about school security at the local school level.

According to the survey 70 percent of districts are using security cameras and 29 percent of districts report that security cameras have had a positive impact on district safety. Another notable finding is that districts should consider the instant access that IP security cameras can give their local police and first responders. Unfortunately, only a small number of districts provide their local police forces with the ability to access digital footage remotely in real-time during emergencies.

Overall, this survey highlights the value schools place on video surveillance as a component of their safety and security initiatives. While IP (network) video is becoming more common and more affordable, it’s clear that school officials need more education about the benefits of IP video and how they can implement it successfully. Moreover, school officials who work with their IT folks, as well as local law enforcement prior to purchasing video should obtain greater, long term benefits for their video implementations.

Does your district use IP video? And do you allow local law enforcement remote access to your school video?
