Teachable Moments in Security

There is no question that the safer the school environment, the more effective the teaching and learning.  Teachers working in secure schools enjoy the benefits of a more focused student body, a personal sense of safety, and generally a more pleasant work environment.

In less secure environments, teachers and students may feel distracted and concerned with their personal safety.  While everyone in the school, including teachers, may assume it’s the responsibility of administrators and law enforcement to maintain a safe campus, in this day and age, it’s actually the responsibility of everyone – especially teachers.

Therefore, teachers must ask themselves what they can do to enhance the learning environment by contributing to the school’s security program.

The truth of the matter is that teachers and staff can play an enormous role in creating a safer learning environment.  Every individual in the school plays a role in either enhancing or detracting from the security of the space.  Teachers have a particularly unique role because they:

  • Are role models for the students
  • Take on roles beyond the classroom – from coaching, chaperoning, to leading extracurricular activities and clubs
  • Have closer relationships with student
  • Are not confined to a desk, but are out in the “thick of things”
